Paranormal Hotspots… If You Dare
Which I do not dare. Nope. Uh-huh. The most goose-bumpy I felt was during a real estate inspection for work. The house was beautiful, the inspector was doing his routine turning everything on and I was following around making notes. This house had a main floor, a little hybrid-floor, and stairs into a standing basement/crawlspace. You’d think the dark concrete basement was the scary hair-raising space of the house. But it was that middle between that kept making my heart race. Mind you, it’s the middle of the day but I couldn’t get the hair on the back of my neck to chill out. So, as someone who totally believes in all that stuff I’m good, I don’t need to seek it out, it’ll find me. Yay — real estate!
But for those of you who don’t get the pleasure to tour and walk through houses from the late-1800s in Bellingham, here are some fun options for you!
Of course, always be respectful, don’t trespass, go with others, tell others where you’re going and be safe physically (and spiritually?).
Let the Experts Be Your Guide
Mayyyybe you don’t want to go about this adventure without some guidance. Totally fair. Luckily, we have two main tour options!
Good Time Girls – “Gore & Lore Tours”
Guided historical walking tours of featuring Creepy tales from Bellingham’s crypts – unsettling hauntings, strange happenings and horrific true crimes! What I love is their stories are rooted in history, which is often more scary then what we can conjure up in our own minds.
Bellingham Ghost Tours
Good Time Girls recommend their partner Bellingham Ghost Tours if you’re seeking a more paranormal-tinged adventure led by professional psychic Charles Crooks.
Haunted & Paranormal Spots You Can Explore
Mount Baker Theatre
For a building built in 1927 filled with creatives and drama, you know it has some delightful history and tales about it! A historic downtown landmark, the Mount Baker Theatre is said to be haunted by a mischievous ghost named "Judy," believed to have lost her home during the theater’s construction. Staff have reported unexplained noises, cold spots, and phantom pranks.
Old Town Café
Located at 316 W Holly Street, this café is open to visitors and known for paranormal activity. Staff and customers report levitating dishes, phantom piano music (though there's no piano), and sightings of a woman peering from a second‑floor window—only to vanish before being seen clearly. This is one of my favorite breakfast spots and even after learning of these new happenings… Their Number Eleven is still the best Eggs Benny in town.
Spark Museum
Another public haunt at 1312 Bay St, the Spark Museum is known for unexpected ghostly interactions—visitors report hearing footsteps in empty areas and musical instruments playing on their own. Honestly, the shows they put on at the SPARK Museum are hair-tingling all on their own! A must-visit!
Sycamore Square — AKA “Black Cat” Building
Located in Fairhaven, this building (which now houses the Black Cat restaurant and other tenants) is said to harbor the ghost known as the “Green Lady.” The structure, dating back to 1890, once hosted the Cascade Club, where notable figures such as Mark Twain and President Taft gathered according to this WhatcomTalk writer. I love the structure of this building for all the history you can feel in it’s bones when you walk through and admire the remarkable staircase. You can walkthrough and there are many great galleries, businesses, and restaurants to check out.
Bayview Cemetery’s “Bayview Angel”
Though less formalized as a haunt, local legends mention the “Bayview angel crying.” — Pretty sure it’s just from the rain and a natural phenomenon, it adds a spooky twist to a cemetery stroll. This cemetery is beautiful too. The grounds are well-kept and it’s a peaceful place.
Oooh, I gotta stop, my heart is racing!
SERIOUSLY! This stuff just makes my heartrate increase. SHEESH! I started to look into places you could stay over night that are haunted like Manresa Castle in Port Townsend, reading more about the Green Lady from people’s experiences, I think I’m good now. Just go on a tour, an adventure, keep your eyes, ears, and mind open and POOF, you’ll find what you weren’t expecting. The world is just like that.
