The Bellingham Snackle Box (Hyperlocal DIY Snack Box)

An advanced, fancy, schmancy Snackle Box

This trend of a “Snackle Box” was too funny not to engage with. Just saying the word is treat: snackle, snackle snackle. So, what is a Snackle Box? It’s an unconventional container turned DIY "snack box" with a focus on being highly-customizable. What makes it different than a lunch box is it is supposed to be a compartmentalized tray or box.

It seems like the “snackle” part comes from the fact it got popular by repuposing fish tackle boxes or those plastic bead boxes (if you craft, you know what I’m talking about!). The purpose of a Snackle Box is for picnics, kids, travel, or hiking. Basically, it’s silly lunch box but more snacks and more fun and it has to be locally stuffed with yummy things! So, to build one locally in Bellingham, pick up a food-safe plastic craft organizer anywhere, then stock it with local treats from the community!

Local Sourcing Guide: Where to Get the Fillings

I feel like the obvious first stop with the most flexibility — after aquiring your comparmentalized box and cleaning it — The Community Food Co-op! Their locally-sourced bulk section has trails mix, dried fruits, nuts, jerky, candies and I feel like getting it to fit in the box would be a breeze! If it’s a Saturday a cruise through the Bellingham’s Farmer’s Market won’t disappoint for snackable additions to your snack box either!

Curating The Box

Okay, this is where things got silly at our house. Chef posed the question of why kind of snack box are we making here? Savory, Sweet, or Fresh! So let’s break it down!

Savory Snack Box

We decided this would have to be made up of anything from Drizzle Olive Oil and Vinegar Tasting Room in Fairhaven. Crackers, Cubed cheese, meats from their deli, and of course a container of the oil. I think I could make an entire snack box from visiting Drizzle alone!

Sweet Snack Box

Okay, for this one, I would say my one-stop spot to make my “Sweet Snack box” would be… Sweet Haven in Fairhaven! They have chocolate covered pretzels, chocolate chunks, rice crispy, s’mores. I think the only thing missing would be like gummy bears or like chewy sweets.

Fresh Snack Box

I’m thinking like berries, snap peas, carrots… The true winner without a doubt would be the Downtown Bellingham Farmer’s Market to get the best of the best local fresh things! But if it’s a week day, I think the Food Community Co-op wins for the best collection of fresh options.

A Local Snackle Box for the ages

Picture it: a local Snackle Box, made by you, ready to go and enjoy with an out-of-town friend for a picnic! How cute would that be? Or better — take your friend with you to create your local snack box! Then it’s a tour, a creation, and an enjoyed treat all together!
