I didn’t grow up in a “walkable” town. I could walk to my elementary school and high school but that was about it. Growing up, my hometown’s downtown was teeny-tiny and didn’t have anything worthwhile. When I came to Bellingham for college and chose to stay for life I realized part of the reason I love it is that Bellingham has always felt like a city built for wandering.
I can spend an entire afternoon wandering with Chef, my husband, from a coffee shop to a local specialized shop dedicated to comic books, thrifted clothes, or home goods. Then cut down a little trail and end up at Boulevard Park to watch the sunset over the bay without ever moving my car. I define “walkable” as connected.
Not every neighborhood delivers that experience equally, though.
Some are ideal for quick errands on foot. Others shine because of trails, waterfront access, or a strong mix of restaurants and local businesses. If you are hoping to live somewhere that makes daily life feel a little easier and a lot more connected, these are the neighborhoods locals talk about most (maybe while they are on a walk)!
1. Fairhaven
If someone moves to Bellingham and says they want “walkability,” Fairhaven is usually the first neighborhood people mention. It used to be one of the few areas you didn’t have to pay to park but that has since changed. So, when you find a home near Fairhaven being able to walk around is huge!
Haggen Grocery store is available for all the things you need while coffee is an option every other block, plus independent shops, meals at Skylarks Hidden Cafe and Village books plus a look at the waterfront all before noon!
Fairhaven also connects beautifully to trails and parks. Boulevard Park is just down the hill, and the South Bay Trail makes it easy to walk or bike toward downtown. Plus, the new development to connect Fairhaven to Downtown is i the works and I couldn’t be more excited!
However, the tradeoff is price. Homes here tend to cost more, and inventory stays tight because people rarely want to leave once they settle in.

2. Downtown Bellingham
Downtown has changed a lot since I first moved here. There are now new condos, apartments, and if you look through street-view on Google maps and toggle the years you’ll see what I mean!
These days you can walk to breweries, restaurants, music venues, coworking spaces, farmers markets, and grocery stores in a matter of minutes. For younger professionals, students, and people who want less maintenance and more activity, downtown is hard to beat.
There is also a surprising amount of character block to block. One street feels artsy and eclectic. Another feels polished and modern. That mix is part of the appeal. There is a never-ending kerfuffle over the bike lanes down Holly, but if you walk you won’t notice that.
The biggest downside is noise and parking. Some people love the buzz. Others discover quickly they miss a quieter neighborhood feel. It’s also important to note that you will see folks who are unhoused. It is a systemic issue that Bellingham is not immune too. Everyone minds their own and I haven’t had any bad experiences with folks beyond the occasional request for a dollar. Many people who come from Seattle and other bigger cities say it’s not as severe here but I don’t have much of a frame of reference. So, if you’re considering downtown be sure to drive and walk around at varying times of day to get the entire feel for your own safety level. The streets are always filled with young adults, families, daily so you’ll be in good company.

3. Columbia
It sits just north of downtown, which means you get many of the walkability perks without feeling like you live in the middle of everything. It’s home for nearly 4,000 Bellingham residents and spans from the waterfront to the center of some neighborhoods. I love walking in this area because the homes are beautiful and diverse!

4. South Hill
South Hill blends views, walkability, and quiet streets better than almost anywhere else in town.
The neighborhood climbs the hillside above Boulevard Park and Fairhaven, so some walks involve a workout (hello Taylor Ave), but the payoff is incredible scenery. Many residents can walk down to the waterfront, coffee shops, or trails within minutes.
This area attracts a mix of longtime locals, professionals, and retirees who value access to both nature and urban amenities. Can you see the theme here? Every place has a bit of everything in Bellingham! South Hill borders Western Washington University and the waterfront and has homes of all sizes and price points between.

5. Sunnyland
Sunnyland has become one of Bellingham’s trendiest neighborhoods. I love this neighborhood because everytime I walk through it I’m like, “What do you MEAN there is just a brewery in the middle of the neighborhood?!”
I see many families looking at this area because Sunnyland Elementary was renovated and allows kids the independence to walk to and from school. Price-wise it also feels more attainable than Fairhaven or South Hill for many buyers, although prices have definitely climbed in recent years. Sunnyland tends to attract people who want something vibrant without being pretentious.

6. Lettered Streets
Lettered Streets often flies under the radar for newcomers, which honestly surprises a lot of longtime residents. Yes, its literally lettered streets, and sprinkled within them is a cafe and an entire theatre!
The location is excellent. You are close to downtown, close to Cornwall Park, and close to several neighborhood cafes and restaurants. The streets are flatter than some other parts of Bellingham too, which makes walking easier day to day.
There is also a practical side to living here. Commutes are convenient, errands are simple, and homes often come with a bit more yard space than you might expect near the city core.

7. York
Yay for York! York has some of the strongest historic character in Bellingham. The homes are colorful, unique, and full of personality from the Victorian architecture era. Sidewalks connect easily into downtown, and it is one of the neighborhoods I see consistent with annual events focused on the neighborhood.
It is especially popular with people who value charm over perfection. Not every home is polished. That is part of the appeal.
