Where to Donate: Clothes, Furniture, and Mattresses

I am someone that can’t stand throwing things away. I am a true believer in, “one person’s junk is another person’s jam.”

In Bellingham, I have had great experiences buying and selling things on Facebook Marketplace and “Buy Nothing” groups online but sometimes the thing doesn’t sell or you just don’t have the time. Or, in my line of work in real estate, sometimes I am the project coordinator and I assist sellers with donating things as they downsize or live out of town and need someone to help donate items that are perfectly wonderful! I’d like to showcase local spots beyond Goodwill and Value Village that accept donations.

No matter if it’s to make room for holiday presents or spring cleaning, here are my go-to spots for donating everything by item!

Where to donate a mattress in Bellingham?

Are are key places for a mattress donation. I’ll mark those that also have free pick-up services (at the time of writing this) as well:

Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County

“We do accept gently used bed mattresses and box-springs as long as they have no stains or tears. However, we must charge a $10 fee per mattress or box-spring in order to sanitize them.”

They also offer a FREE donation pickup service for donors living in their service area with items that cannot be reasonably transported in their vehicle.

The Salvation Army Thrift Stores

I haven’t used this service, but other folks I know have and seemed to have a good experience, it appears you have to call to learn more about their donation pickup service.

Where to donate furniture in Bellingham?

There are many incredible places to shop and donate furniture, I’ll list a few to get you started. Most furniture needs to be fair or good condition. Be sure to check each donation center’s guidelines for specifics.

  • Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County

    • They are very thorough in their donation guidelines, but accept a a lot from Wood furniture, to upholstered furniture, patio, file cabinets, etc.

  • Assistance League Bellingham - Thrift and Gift Shop

    • I donated items from a homeowner who getting ready to sell (yay real estate!) and donating to AL was the fastest easiest donation of a car-load I had done in a long time! I called ahead just because I had many household items from floor lamps to knick-knacks the only thing they didn’t take was the curtain.

  • Re Store

    • These folks take the sturdy furniture in your life, like the solid wood furniture pieces. They look for quality, clean materials that can be repaired for a lifetime.

Where to donate Clothes in Bellingham?

Here you have plenty of options! So here is a quick list:

Where to donate Kids items in Bellingham?

Donate what you got! Someone is waiting to give it new life!

At the end of the day, donating can feel like a hassle, but luckily in Bellingham there are plenty of options, stores, thrift places to donate (and buy) good quality stuff. To all my college readers, please resist putting your stuff on the side of the road when you move out. I’ve seen to many mysterious couches appear on the easements across town. So here, is a bonus round for you.

Can’t Donate, Must Trash it!

Try any of these places to learn how to properly trash your junk:

  • Waste Wise Portal

    • The ultimate guide for Whatcom County to tell you how to recycle or properly dispose anything!

Best of luck donating and disposing!
