Övn Wood Fired Pizza

Pizza is a timeless joy. So when you find a pizza place that not only satisfies that crave of pizza but always has a new surprise on the menu, you know you’ve found one of Bellingham’s best pizza places: Övn Wood Fire Pizza. Chef and I have been going here for a long time and have brought our friends, family, extended family because there is something for everyone.

Including our gluten-free and vegan friends who have proclaimed that Övn is one best tasting and reliable options for their dietary needs. To continue down that path, Övn’s website says, “[Our] gluten-free crust that can be used for pizzas, sandwiches, flatbread, and even our garlicky bread-bites. Our gluten-free dough is made with sea salt, olive oil, gluten-free yeast, and a specialty, imported USDA-certified gluten-free flour mix that contains Codex wheat starch,” and for our vegan friends they say, “We offer dairy-free alternatives (pictured here!) and lactose free cheese options, as well as vegan sausage and pepperoni.”

The Pizza at Övn

“All You Can Eat” Coasters + Ovn’s Story on the back of their menu.

I don’t think I need to dive into the wonderous deliciousness of pizza, but I do want to share that their Neapolitan-inspired, wood fired pizzas taste like one of a kind. Chef and I often each order an 8-inch pizza and swap two of our slices with the other. You’ll end up satisfied but we also get some of the side dishes, which I will get into later. My favorite pizza to order was their Forge pizza which had a ton of mushrooms on it. It might have been a seasonal pizza, so these days I’m ordering their Nico which has truffle dust, sage, caramelized onions, mozzarella, local Fontina, crimini mushrooms, chevre, and olive oil. Chef is always a wild card and will order anything from the classic pepperoni, margherita pizza, to their spicier pizzas and more exciting options like the Matterhorn Pizza which has yellow potatoes, cream, caramelized onions, rosemary, 10-month Comte Gruyere, and sausage.

What I can say without a doubt is we have tried everything at Övn! How can I write that with such confidence? Well, Övn often hosts “All You Can Eat” days. Usually on a Monday, but you have to check out Övn’s Instagram for the latest dates. Chef and I went and the most amazing thing about Övn is that each slice is light and flavorful so you don’t end up to stuffed and you actually get to enjoy the “All You Can Eat”.

The way it worked when we went was they gave us coasters, one side was red the other green, and if you had the green side up a sever would bring around a pizza and give you a slice, if you flipped it to red, it meant the server could by-pass you. Chef left his on green the entire time because half the adventure was you didn’t know what pizza would come next and if you had the green side they’d swing by with a fresh pizza, describe it to you, and you could take it or leave it. I don’t think Chef declined a single slice. Some of the pizzas they brought by weren’t even on the menu, I recall a pizza with corn on it that was elote-themed, one that had a spicy drizzle, one with salmon on it. I took photos, but I was having so much fun eating the slices the photos didn’t turn out amazing, but I’ll throw them in here anyway!

The Dining Space at Övn Pizza in Fairhaven

I love eating inside and outside at Ovn, it’s on the business-level of the South Bay Suite Building and it will firmly be there because they have a Acunto Mario Classico 10. Weighing 3 tons, it’s not going anywhere. According to their website the oven was hand-built in Naples, Italy and it burns Yakima applewood to reach over 800-degrees and cooks perfectly blistered, Neapolitan-inspired pizzas in 2 minutes.

Most often Chef and I go in the afternoons and there aren’t many folks there so it feels like we have the whole space to ourselves. We watch people get their pizza’s to go, but we love sitting in there and looking around, getting glimpses of the oven and everyone working hard. It’s a very enjoyable environment. Even when all the tables are full it doesn’t feel crowded.

Our Favorite Bites from Övn

When you go, you must known that they excel at pizza but they do more than just pizza! When you visit here are the three things I recommend you order in addition to your pizza (seriously, even if you’re not a “kale” person.)

Kale Caesar Salad

The salad contains: Kale, house-caesar dressing, herbed croutons, shaved grana, lemon. Dressing contains anchovy. You seriously will not regret getting this salad. It’s one of the things we always order when we dine-in. We upgrade to the full size and share it between ourselves and whoever else we have snagged to join us. It is the perfect opener to the pizzas. The kale isn’t bitter, the house dressing is flavorful without being pungent and you will be fighting over the croutons.

Garlicky Bread-Bites

Another item your table will fight over the last one for. The Bread-Bites are the perfect baked bites of pizza dough. The garlic-parmesan butter they are tossed in has just as much care and flavor imbued in it. Plus it is served with crushed tomatoes for dipping. It’s a pile of bread perfection that you won’t regret ordering nor will it spoil your appetite before pizza because like the rest of of the meal, its portioned skillfully and so light you don’t realize you’ve eaten all of them.

Chocolate Chip Cookie

HOLD ON. Before you picture any’ol’chocolate chip cookie, let me set the scene. You think you’re full, but then they offer you a dessert menu and while the lemon bar is tempting (Chef loves it) and the seasonal option might sway you, you must order their Chocolate Chip Cookie with ice cream.

The cookie is the epitome of my cookie-loving dreams. The cookie is literally prepared in the Acunto Mario Classico 10 and sometimes you can smell that fresh cookie smell waft from the oven before it arrives filling the restaurant wit it’s scent. Then it arrives at your table.

It’s perfect to share between two people or the entire table. It’s that “fresh from the oven” cookie you always wanted and I will never not order it when I am at Övn Wood Fire Pizza.

One of my Favorite Pizza places in Bellingham, Övn Wood Fired Pizza!

I just love the familiar faces of the staff, the consistency of the pizza, the thrill of knowing something new will be there every time I visit and their investment in the community from giving discounts if you work in Fairhaven to working with local producers and so much more. If you haven’t been in awhile or ever, you simply must make a trip to Fairhaven to enjoy one of Bellingham’s best pizza spots!
