Sew Inspired in Fairhaven

It was Ski to Sea and Chef and I were walking down to the finish line when we absolutely gob smacked to discover a shop we had completely missed; this amazing fabric store bustling away doing it’s own thing on Harris Ave. Of course, we went in!! Chef has grown an interest in hemming and sewing lately as we’ve come to realize most of our closet still consists of clothes we’ve had since high school and every time we buy something new it’s just not sized to our liking. So, we love going through local craft stores to get a feel of things. But let me just say, walking into Sew Inspired Fabrics was like walking into a Wonderland!

The Fabrics

As someone who does a lot of theatre I have been put in all kinds of outfits and had the immeasurable honor of having dresses created and fitted to my body and I have always loved the conversations I hear the costume designers and costume technicians/makers discuss as they measure me… What kind of materials and fabrics to use. What will withstand 13+ shows? What will allow me to move in during this dance sequence and so on. While I think Chef and I will always regret not taking Western Washington University’s Costuming Course, through the peripheries we have gathered endless appreciation for the talent and skills of those creators. So, when we walked into Sew Inspired Fabrics, we knew these fabrics were carefully and masterfully curated.

“We curate high-quality, sustainable apparel fabrics, indie sewing patterns, and the notions and tools you need to create a wardrobe you’ll love,” says Sew Inspired Fabric’s website and I believe it! I happily walked around and we’d each carefully touch the fabrics, debate how we’d use it and laugh knowing we didn’t really have the skillset to accomplish making whatever we conjured… Yet.

Sew Inspired Fabric’s Classes

One of the best parts of walking into this shop was when Chef poked me and whispered, “Look at her pants, those are awesome!” One of the shop-keepers was expertly cutting fabric and indeed, her pants were beautiful and without a doubt in our minds, handcrafted. They were flowy, the buttons had personality, and the breeches looked SO COMFY!

As we walked through the shop, we noticed a corner full of sewing machines. After we checked out their website while we were in the shop we read, “We offer classes for the beginner to seasoned sewist to help you create unique clothes you'll be proud to wear.” Which I must say felt so inspiring and welcoming to read and see right there in the space! It appears that the classes are small and fill up fast so don’t wait to sign up if you’re feeling a tug at your heart threads to try something new! See their website for the classes offered at Sew Inspired.

Bits and Bobbles and Buttons…

Of course, the section that held my attention the longest was the section with all the colorful threads, patterns, and button options. There were so many pattern options from pajamas to day-dresses that truly looked approachable and like something we could figure out! I was certainly tempted by the jumpsuit pattern. Oh, to have a perfectly fitted jumpsuit to romp around in.

We left Inspired after a visit to Sew Inspired Fabrics

It really is true to it’s name. Everyone in the shop was asking questions, their minds were working on creating something, and the shopkeepers were so friendly and ready to help. To say we left more inspired than when we came in is an understatement. I can’t wait to make Sew Inspired Fabrics my go-to when I am in charge of sewing up holes in pockets or replacing buttons that have run off to new adventures.
