I won’t lie, I was thrilled when my parents told me they plan on retiring in Bellingham, as did my aunt, and several other people who visit me here.

I can see why! The calm access to the Bellingham Bay. The easy drives for all things local. The hub-bub of happenings every day of the week. The community and volunteer opportunities just waiting for retirees who still want to work, make, and create are readily available. Bellingham has all the pace of a big city happening spot without the pressure!

For retirees looking to put down roots somewhere beautiful, active, and connected, Bellingham has quietly become one of the Pacific Northwest’s most appealing places to land. Which I have heard over and over again from a variety of people I have met at open houses. You get mountain views, saltwater air, healthcare access, and neighborhoods with real personality. Not cookie cutter developments. Actual neighborhoods where people know each other.

Which has been one of the joys I’ve found whenever I am showing homes in these neighborhoods to my retiree friends I’ve met volunteering. Whenever we finish a showing and are standing outside a friendly neighbor will usually pop out and start sharing their insights and love for the area.

The trick is figuring out which part of town feels like home. Here are some of the best neighborhoods in Bellingham for retirees, depending on the lifestyle you want to wake up to each morning.

Fairhaven

This one might seem obvious, which is why I am starting there! If you picture retirement with morning walks to a coffee shop, sunset strolls by the water, and the occasional bookstore stop that turns into a two-hour conversation, then Fairhaven absolutely, deserves your attention.

Fairhaven feels almost cinematic at times, I think I’ve also said it has catharsis in another post. The storied-brick buildings and walkability is awesome. Small locally owned restaurants spill onto sidewalks during events and you can walk to the waterfront trail and watch boats drift across the bay while snow sits on the peaks in the distance.

Retirees love Fairhaven because it is both lively and manageable. There is energy here, but not chaos. You can stay active without needing to drive everywhere. Condos and townhomes are common, making it appealing for those wanting less maintenance and more freedom.

There is also a community in Fairhaven. You start recognizing faces quickly. I adore the squad of older folks from Cafe Blue who greet me. The business owners are in their shops, restaurants, and they remember you. That matters more than people realize.

Two “cons” I’ll share are one: Fairhaven wraps up early, it gets really quiet after about 6PM! And two, businesses are in flux in this area so there are some empty storefronts and some beloved staples have moved on or the owners have retired, but when one door closes another opens and hopefully new businesses will take up residence and continue the wonderful spirit of Fairhaven!

Edgemoor

For retirees looking for quiet elegance, Edgemoor has long been one of Bellingham’s most sought after neighborhoods. It can be on the most expensive side, but even just driving through, you can see why: the streets are peaceful. Homes sit among beautiful trees and even more beautifully landscaped yards. In some pockets, you catch glimpses of the bay. In others, you hear almost nothing except birds and the occasional breeze.

Edgemoor attracts people who want privacy while still being close to town. Fairhaven is minutes away, with Haggen as your main grocery store. Downtown is easy to reach. The southside trails and waterfront access are nearby without feeling crowded. There is a calm confidence in this neighborhood. Nobody is trying too hard here. It simply feels settled. For retirees who have spent years in busier metro areas, that sense of calm can feel like a deep exhale.

Cordata

Not every retiree wants a historic district or waterfront home. Some want convenience! Here, here! Easy errands. Single level living. Access to healthcare and newer homes. That is where Cordata shines! 

I love the condos at Cordata and many of the 55+ communities here are awesome! Located on the north side of town, Cordata has become increasingly popular with retirees because life here is practical in all the right ways. Medical facilities, grocery stores, pharmacies, and shopping are all nearby. Streets tend to be wider and flatter than some of Bellingham’s hillier neighborhoods, which has been a bonus from many folks I’ve talked too.

You will also find many newer developments designed with accessibility in mind.

Cordata does not have the same historic charm as Fairhaven, but it offers ease. And honestly, ease can be underrated until you experience how nice it feels to have everything close by on a rainy November afternoon!

South Hill

There are neighborhoods that feel impressive, and then there are neighborhoods that quietly steal your heart. South Hill tends to do the latter.

Perched above the bay near downtown Bellingham and Fairhaven, South Hill blends historic homes, walkability, and some of the best views in the city. On clear evenings, the sunsets here can stop you in your tracks (as will the literal train-tracks down the hill).

This neighborhood appeals to retirees who still want a bit of urban energy nearby. You can walk downtown for dinner, head to the farmers market on a Saturday, or catch a show at Mount Baker Theatre, New Prospect, or the Bellingham Theatre Guild without losing that residential feel when you come home.

One thing to know is that South Hill has, wait for it, hills. Some streets are steep. For active retirees, that is part of the charm. For others, it is something to consider carefully.

Still, few neighborhoods in Bellingham feel quite as timeless.

Birch Bay and Semiahmoo for a Coastal Lifestyle

Okay, okay, technically outside of Bellingham, both Birch Bay and Semiahmoo, I think deserve mention because so many retirees exploring Bellingham eventually fall in love with the slower coastal lifestyle farther north.

I have always loved making the drive to show homes in Birch Bay and Semiahmoo. It’s the most relaxing experience!

Birch Bay has a relaxed beach town feel. People bike along the waterfront. Neighbors wave from porches. Sunsets stretch wide across the water toward Canada. Semiahmoo offers a more resort style atmosphere with golf, marina access, walking trails, and upscale homes tucked near the shoreline.

In both Birch Bay and Semiahmoo there are all kinds of house types from condos to single-family homes, to waterfront mansions. I truly cannot get over how lovely this area is.

For retirees who want peaceful surroundings and daily waterfront access, these communities can feel like hidden gems while still keeping close enough to amenities.

A Few Things Retirees Love About Bellingham Overall

Retirement is not only about the house you buy. It is about the rhythm of your days. If you ask me, Bellingham makes it easy to build a good rhythm.

You have access to outdoor recreation year round (even though it can be wet), from waterfront walks to forested trails. There is a thriving local food scene without the overwhelm of a major city. Healthcare access is solid all things considered. The community leans active and engaged.

And perhaps most importantly, people here genuinely use the city around them. Parks are full. Trails are busy. Coffee shops stay conversational instead of transactional. Events are community-driven and full of fun from Tune-Up for bikers to Noisy Water Mural Festival for artists.

This town feels lived in. From the people I’ve met doing house tours, that is a big reason so many retirees arrive for a visit and quietly start browsing real estate listings before they leave.

The Neighborhood for Retirees

The best neighborhood in Bellingham for retirement depends on what kind of life you want to build next. I think I’ve said that in most of these “Best of” blogs, but it really is true.

If you want walkability and charm, Fairhaven may pull you in immediately. If quiet luxury sounds appealing, Edgemoor is hard to beat. If convenience and accessibility matter most, Cordata deserves a serious look. And if coastal sunsets are calling your name, Birch Bay or Semiahmoo may end up winning your heart.

The good news is there are very few wrong answers here. That is part of what makes Bellingham and the Pacific Northwest special and why so many people find their way back to Bellingham eventually!
