Musical Concert on the Water with Beats on the Bay!
Beats on the Bay is one of the coolest musical experiences that is popping up in town and I have to share the very roundabout way we discovered it!
I love when my mother-in-law pops into town. She always give Chef and I a theme or style of food and we pick out the restaurant. This week she picked fish and chips but she had her sweet puppy with her so we had to pick a spot that was dog-friendly as well.
We landed on Port Fairhaven Fish-N-Chips. Waterfont seating. Great fish’n’chips? C’mon. Chef and I always share the “Captain Platter” because it has a bit of everything and we are both full from just that one dish.
As we walked up we were thrilled to see the Schooner Zodiac docked. We attended an “Open Boat” for the Zodiac and I have been looking for every excuse to be on that boat again. Anyway, our little group walked by in admiration and there was a band playing on the Schooner. I believe it was Kate Dinsmore, as she is what was on their schedule that day. So, not only are we happily enjoying the best fish and chips in our dog-friendly outside table that’s covered with an umbrella, we are enjoying this little pre-show warm-up and the singer was killing it.
Finally, we start to ask ourselves… Why is this singer just singing her heart out? There is no audience on deck… And have some research we discovered: Beats on the Bay!
Music on the Water
By land or sea, audiences can enjoy this summer send-off concert series produced by the The Community Boating Center (CBC) and the Zodiac Schooner. I have the utmost respect for a nonprofit like the CBC whose mission it is to foster small-watercraft education, access, safe recreation, and marine stewardship on Bellingham Bay.
This production is without a doubt one of the coolest walk-by and must-stop events in Bellingham. You can reserve a paddle craft from the CBC, a VIP spot on the Zodiac, or just go for a wander down Taylor Dock and the South Bay Trail. Honestly though, the folks in the water looked like they were having an absolute blast even though it was a windier day!
On their website they showcase where folks can launch their watercrafts from and where the Zodiac will be anchored during the performance. The shows begin around 6ish and can be cancelled if the winds are above a certain mph.
Concert on the Water? Yes, please!
Only in Bellingham can one merge their love of water, watercrafts, boats, and music so seamlessly for a mega concert — And did I mention its free? You can (and should) support the local nonprofit by renting a paddle craft or get really fancy with your VIP ticket, but the rest of us can just launch our own paddle crafts or walk the dock and enjoy the entire event.
Bonus Tip~
Get visit the Fairhaven Terminal, eat some fish’n’chips and maybe you’ll catch the band doing it’s tech rehearsal on board the schooner.
Be sure to check out the CBC’s Website for the latest updates, instructions, and when the concerts are and don’t miss a single musical note of Beats on the Bay!
