SUGAR: A Cabaret — An Unforgettable Night Out

Since SUGAR: A Cabaret hit the Bellingham scene in 2016, I think I’ve missed seeing two productions. Which is really unfortunate because every production of SUGAR is reimagined. Every venue that is graced by SUGAR is transformed into a glittery, magenta, cabaret.

Now, before we get any further, let me share a lil-bit that always seems to confuse people: Cabaret is a form of live theatrical entertainment featuring a mix of music, song, dance, comedy, and satire, usually performed in a space where guests sit at tables and eat or drink. A burlesque a style of theatrical entertainment that uses the art of “the tease” to mock serious subjects or entertain audiences. Sugar, like it’s name is a Cabaret, so everyone is fully dressed, and at it’s raunchiest, still PG-13 in it’s visual content, and Sugar’s cast, crew, and band know how to bring the sexy perfectly merge the silly.

What I love about SUGAR the Show is how creative it is. It is choregraphed dances, live singing, a full band, it’s just everything I love about theatre and live music blended together to create a spectacular that is full of energy that rises and falls as the story unfolds. Even if the shows didn’t have a through-line, I could listen to them just sing song after song, yet they create a show that engages the auidence, from Sugar (herself) going through the audience, singing happy birthday, or snagging one lucky audience member onto the stage.

Brie Mueller is Sugar

Brie is a powerhouse of a creative performer. She brings together a cast every show and elevates their talents to brig the show to life. I’ve seen literally had the joy of seeing aerial artists and tap-dancers in these shows, like, what?! Brie’s ability to assemble singers, dancers, and musicians and create a tantalizing show in Bellingham always blows me away. She’s on stage the whole show belting rock songs, making audiences cry with ballads, dancing to musical theatre classics like it’s nothing — Except when she does in fact need to catch her breathe, and somehow makes that a moment filled with laughter. She fulfills the promise that Sugar is, “the most fun-filled, sexy, silly and sassy evening.”

What to Expect at SUGAR: A Cabaret

One: the shows will sell out. So, if you’re reading this blog as a way to decide if you should attend Sugar the Show, just go buy your ticket now.

But you can expect a lively atmosphere that is unique to this vivacious cabaret. A level of audience comradery (and rowdiness if you see them perform at a bar). Shows are typically 90-minutes and depending on where and what the theme is, can be longer with more songs and have an intermission. Like I said at the start, they reimagine every Sugar show, so even if you’ve seen it before, it’ll be a new experience.

The shows are meant to blow you away and, venue dependent, can be loud, so bring your Loops, ear plugs, or noise reduction preference if you love a good ruckus but don’t want to have the ringing afterwards, because depending on how much screaming you and the audience do, it can get loud.

In every venue I’ve seen SUGAR, The Underground, New Prospect Theatre, Walton Theatre, Mount Baker Theatre’s Main Stage, The Triple Door in Seattle, and Bar 211 — There are no bad seats. Brie is a master at making sure every seat in the audience is played too. Some Venues max out and you end up with standing room only and those have been some of the best spots, you can dance, the bar is closer, it’s just as much as fun as sitting in the VIP seats! Which, also, hello, VIP ticket options include bubbles, treats, and front row tables plus extra-extra sugar from Sugar and the performers.

What kind of music is performed at Sugar?

It’s a total mix of whatever Sugar herself fancies, which is what makes every production so fun. Brie’s singing is dynamic as is her ensemble. One minute you’re shouting, “Where is my husband” by RAYE then a song from Hamilton, or Brittney Spears, AC/DC, Beyonce, Bruno Mars, Bonnie Tyler, The Weather Girls, I mean — the possibilities of what you will get to hear at Sugar feel infinite!

Why You Should See SUGAR: A Cabaret

Because it’s one of the top-tier performances you’ll see in Bellingham. It is developed, produced, and performed by local performers who are in a league of their own. The band, cast, singers, dancers, they are truly talents that are forces to be reckoned with. The energy, sultriness, sass, and smiles they bring to the stage are unparallelled. The time and commitment they have put into their crafts and rehearsing for these shows that are usually only a weekend or two are just jaw-dropping. Sugar the Show also only performs once or twice a year, so it’s a treat that’s worth gathering your friends and post-poning any other plans you thought you had.
